West Coast LEAF (WCL) is an intersectional feminist legal advocacy organization working to deepen substantive equality for women and gender-diverse people. We have an established track record of contributing to landmark legal victories and progressive changes to the law and public policy. We are a provincially based non-profit society and federally registered charity, funded through a mix of foundation and government grants, individual donations, and sponsorships of our annual International Women’s Day Equality Breakfast. Position Summary

The Manager of Development plays a strategic and hands-on role in strengthening WCL’s fundraising during a period of organizational transition and growth. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role is responsible for building and advancing a relationship-based individual fundraising program that grows donor engagement, increases revenue, and supports long-term sustainability. In addition, this role contributes to grant prospecting and proposal development in collaboration with the Executive Director and program staff, supporting the organization’s near-term revenue needs.

Working in close collaboration with leadership and the Manager of Communications, the Manager of Development brings structure, clarity, and consistency to donor engagement efforts, with a focus on monthly giving, major gifts, and legacy giving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Individual Giving Strategy, Leadership & Execution:
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and implement an individual giving strategy aligned with organizational priorities
  • Identify and prioritize key areas of growth (e.g. monthly giving, major gifts, legacy giving) and adjust tactics based on results
  • Provide guidance to the Executive Director on fundraising strategy and donor engagement, and support staff and board in effective relationship management
  • Work cross-functionally with communications, programs, and operations staff to align fundraising efforts
  • Act as an internal resource to build fundraising knowledge and capacity across staff and board
  • Represent the organization externally to build donor relationships and visibility
  • Donor Relationship Management & Giving Programs:
  • Build and manage relationships with donors across giving levels, implementing stewardship strategies to increase retention and upgrade giving
  • Identify and cultivate major gift prospects
  • Re-engage lapsed members and donors, and connect supporters with appropriate staff, leadership, or board members throughout their engagement journey
  • Strengthen and grow the monthly donor program and execute annual giving campaigns (email, direct mail, and digital appeals)
  • Develop donor-facing materials (e.g., appeals, updates, impact stories) in collaboration with the Manager of Communications, ensuring donor journeys are clear, consistent, and values-aligned
  • Develop and advance a legacy giving program, engaging key audiences (including the legal community) to grow planned giving interest
  • Grants and Foundation Funding:
  • Identify and assess grant opportunities aligned with organizational priorities
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and program staff to develop and draft competitive proposals
  • Equality Breakfast & Event Fundraising:
  • Play a leadership role in organizing the annual Equality Breakfast, including sponsorship strategy, outreach, and partner stewardship
  • Organize other fundraising and related events throughout the year (such as donor receptions and the AGM)
  • Systems & Pipeline Management:
  • Manage and ensure the integrity of WCL’s donor database, donation processing and tax receipting systems, and integrations with RedArc and Campaign Monitor
  • Maintain a clear and actionable donor pipeline using Raiser’s Edge, and prepare regular fundraising performance reports for leadership

 

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive fundraising experience, with a focus on individual giving, including:
  • Managing donor relationships and growing revenue over time
  • Developing and implementing individual giving strategies
  • Using email marketing platforms and integrations (such as Campaign Monitor)
  • Planning and executing appeals, including writing copy, list segmentation and running online campaigns
  • Using a CRM (Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar) to manage and track donor engagement and giving
  • Organizing fundraising events such as donor receptions; experience with larger-scale events such as galas is an asset
  • Experience developing or contributing substantially to successful grant proposals in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills in a small, collaborative environment
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively about West Coast LEAF’s work and values, including plain language translation for fundraising materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience relating to social justice issues, law, gender studies or other relevant areas
  • Alignment with West Coast LEAF’s values as an intersectional gender justice organization, including equity and community-centred approaches to fundraising

Job Details

  • Employment: Permanent full-time; 37.5 hours per week, generally during normal business hours, with occasional evening and weekend work required
  • Compensation: $83,750 to $88,750 depending on experience
  • Vacation & benefits: 3 weeks starting vacation plus annual holiday closure; employer-paid extended health benefits; health spending account; professional development
  • Location: Hybrid, with at least 2 days per week at our downtown Vancouver offices
