Strategic Opportunities

At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

The Development & Alumni Engagement (DAE) portfolio at UBC joins development (fundraising) and alumni UBC functions under one umbrella. DAE is a one of the leading advancement teams in Canada and has oversight for fundraising and alumni engagement at all UBC campuses and locations, including UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. With over 300 employees, DAE currently raises over $300 million and engages over 100,000 alumni annually.

FORWARD, the campaign for UBC, will raise $3 billion and activate the power of our global alumni by doubling alumni engagement.  The campaign will benefit research, teaching and learning across both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses in three key areas—advancing healthy lives, creating solutions for the planet, and shaping thriving societies.  To learn more about FORWARD, see give.ubc.ca/forward.

The Strategic Opportunities unit directs fundraising strategies for established individual donors, immediate Presidential development priorities, and works with emerging priority prospects capable of considering $5 million+ gifts. The team also offers strategic guidance, content development, and support to other Development units to promote significant private investment to UBC and FORWARD, the campaign for UBC.

The Director of Development, Principal Gifts will support principal and transformational gift strategy by identifying prospects, developing clear and collaborative strategies, creating concepts for gift solicitation, executing on gift documentation and the university approval process, and ensuring recognition and stewardship for principal gift level donors.

The Director is responsible for contributing to the preparation and monitoring of unit goals, and for managing, evaluating, and coordinating the design and development of complex fundraising opportunities. The role also includes actively supervising, supporting and mentoring junior colleagues.
