Director, Fund Development & Communications

About DEWC

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice, and injury. Through low barrier Drop-In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 1000 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them.  See website (www.dewc.ca) for details on our mission and mandate as well as programs and services.

The Opportunity

The Director, Fund Development & Communications is responsible for the development, management, and implementation of DEWC’s fundraising, donor relations, grants, and communications plan. The director will develop, implement, and oversee a multi-year fundraising plan including major gifts, annual appeal, planned giving and special events. Managing the Fund Development team, this position requires a true strategic partner who is collaborative and capable of building consensus and commitment toward shared outcomes. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, DEWC the Director works closely with the board and DEWC leadership team to ensure the success of DEWC strategic objectives. She will work from a feminist perspective and within an anti-oppression framework.

 About You

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and at least five years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education, and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing fund development strategies and targets in more than one or all of the following: Annual Giving, Planned Giving, Major Gifts, Corporate Giving, Foundations, and Government Funding
  • Ability to identify, influence, and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce (or similar CRM), Digital Communications tools, Communications Planning, and/or Event Planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills, and demonstrated ability to work with donors, funders, volunteers, staff, and board of directors.
  • Proven ability to cultivate, manage, and support high-functioning and efficient teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of the issues impacting women in the DTES, including gender-based violence mental health, homelessness/housing precarity, and substance use.

•    Permanent, full-time, 9-day fortnight schedule

•    Excluded position: Salary Range: $103,721 -  $120,098 per annum based on experience.

Job Requirements

Qualifications required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in fundraising, donor relations, and communications ideally in a not-for-profit.
  • Experience in managing websites and social media platforms for a business or nonprofit organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills, and demonstrated ability to work with donors, funders, volunteers, staff and board of directors, ideally in a non-for-profit.
  • Ability to provide thoughtful, progressive, and strategic guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and solve practical problems.
  • Ability to identify, influence, and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve desired organizational outcomes.
  • Proficiency in donor database software and digital communication tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including proficiency in developing and delivering presentations
  • Must have a strong working knowledge and analysis of the issues impacting women in the DTES, including gender-based violence, mental health, substance use and housing
  • Candidate must work from strong feminist analysis and within an anti-oppression framework.
  • Ability to work within a busy, chaotic environment and with a diverse community of women.
  • A First Aid certificate is required.
  • Candidate must undergo a criminal record check.
  • Salary position that requires some work outside of normal business hours to undertake position responsibilities, meet deadlines, and ensure delivery of highquality programs and services.
