Job Description

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation is Vancouver Coastal Health’s primary philanthropic partner and the leading charity investing in health care innovation in British Columbia, raising essential funds for specialized adult health care services and research for people across the province. In partnership with donors, the Foundation supports Vancouver Coastal Health’s key institutions, including VGH & UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, and Community Health Services.

The Foundation is one of BC’s largest fundraising organizations, whose dedicated staff team of more than 110 people raised $149+ million last year from 13,600 committed supporters.  Approximately 70% of the Foundation’s annual revenue is raised by the Philanthropy & Campaign Division, including the Foundation’s exceptional team of major gifts fundraisers focused on gifts of over $100,000.

About the Role

The Philanthropy Advisor develops and manages a portfolio of approximately 100 –125 active major gift prospects capable of giving $100,000 or more. Additionally, the Advisor will develop and execute donor cultivation and stewardship strategies and tactics to achieve individual and departmental revenue targets and to ensure a strong, positive relationship between each donor and the Foundation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Major Gifts team to develop, implement, and enhance strategies to grow revenue across the portfolio of fundraising initiatives, setting annual benchmarks for growth and goal achievement.
  • Leading the key strategies of campaigns in the phases from initial planning, pipeline development, inspiring team and cross team members.
  • Achieving annual fundraising target of $3 million or more, as appropriately aligned with donor pipeline.
  • Develop and implement strategies to grow the major gifts portfolio of individual, corporate and foundation donors to increase the number of donors and the size of gift. This encompasses directing the research, identification, cultivation and tracking of major gifts and planned giving prospects.
  • Solicit major gifts in one-on-one meetings or phone calls with donors.
  • Develop and execute detailed development plans for each prospect.
  • Help establish annual and multi-year performance targets, including number of donors by category, dollars raised, number of donor meetings, etc.
  • Prepare & deliver regular status reports on projections, proposals pending, and cultivation process.
  • Ensure that all relevant information regarding meetings, visits, and donor activities and related data is recorded in the Foundation’s information systems in a timely fashion to facilitate open communication and a team-based fundraising environment.
  • Mitigates risk to the Foundation by ensuring all necessary policies, standards and procedures are developed and monitored ensuring appropriate compliance and no single point of failure.
  • Develops and establishes appropriate long and short-term goals and metrics for evaluating and improving fundraising initiatives.
  • Creating business solutions for donors with complex giving requirements which also align with the business requirement.
  • Identifies risks in donor activities and bring forward to discussion with the Philanthropy Lead, Major Gifts to determine course of action.
  • Provides leadership through influence, fostering collaboration across teams and contributing to strategic initiatives, projects, and organizational priorities that advance the Foundation’s goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates leadership by example, modeling the Foundation’s values, fundraising best practices, and a commitment to excellence in donor engagement, stewardship, and relationship management.
  • Leads and contributes to complex donor strategies, philanthropic initiatives, and cross-functional projects, partnering effectively with colleagues, physicians, volunteers, and organizational leaders to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Accountable for achieving individual fundraising revenue targets and advancing a portfolio of donors and prospects through strategic cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
Job Requirements

What You Offer

  • Holds broad and extensive knowledge of the fundraising profession, non-profit industry and health care philanthropy, and has proven strategic expertise in major gift and campaign fundraising.
  • Maintains an understanding of best practices in philanthropy, updating job knowledge, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional association activities.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the Foundation.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and relationship skills and proven ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion.
  • Strong project and time management skills, with the ability to remain focused under pressure, particularly when faced with multiple competing demands.
  • Leadership experience in a capital or comprehensive campaign environment, preferred.
  • An enthusiastic and knowledgeable fundraising professional, the incumbent is experience in raising major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Able to write clear and compelling letters and proposals and make concise and engaging presentations.
  • Ability to analyze data extracted from CRM, fundraising reports, and KPIs, to determine the health of donor pipeline, and revenue projection.
