Job Description

Position overview:

37.5 Hours (Full Time)
End date of March 31, 2026, with the possibility of Extension
Annual Salary Range - $57,000-$62,000

A key fund development role within BCSS, the Development Officer contributes significantly to the growth and sustainability of the development portfolio. This role is responsible for donor relations, administration of the donor database, flawless documentation of charitable gifts, donation reports and donor stewardship. The Development Officer also assists with the execution of the annual fundraising plan in the areas of community fundraising, grant support, digital fundraising, peer-to-peer, and corporate initiatives. This position promises ample opportunities for professional growth as a fundraising professional through significant contributions to charitable initiatives.
This role reports to the Director of Development.

This is a primarily remote position, requiring weekly visits to the provincial office in Vancouver for donation processing, banking and administrative tasks, as well as attendance at special events and meetings.

Responsibilities:

DONOR RELATIONS MANAGEMENT (60%)

  • Acts as the society’s DonorPerfect database administrator entering all donations, gift information, and donor information
  • Maintains detailed records of all donations, pledges, donor contact information, donor interactions, donor attributes, recognition and communication preferences
  • Generates charitable tax receipts and/or business receipts required per BCSS policies and procedures while adhering to Canada Revenue Agency guidelines
  • Performs database maintenance, including regular check-ups and duplicate management
  • Produces reports, donor lists, or other data generated from the database
  • Creates online donation templates and processes online donations
  • Performs donor stewardship activities, ensuring gift recognition and stewardship policies and procedures are followed
  • Performs stewardship tasks including thank you emails and calls, email and mail welcomes, personalized event invites, donor surveys and impact reports
  • Receives and responds to donor inquiries by phone and email in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Prepares and completes weekly bank deposits
  • Assists with monthly financial reconciliation and annual audit
  • Performs related duties, such as word processing, maintaining donation record filing systems, faxing, scanning, and photocopying
  • Assists with and attends the Donor Appreciation Event

FUNDRAISING (40%)

  • Leads the third-party (community) fundraising program, responding to inquiries, organizing BCSS involvement and assisting with marketing initiatives
  • Researches grant opportunities and maintains a grant pipeline
  • Assists with grant writing and applications
  • Provides support with individual and corporate donor prospecting
  • Provides support with digital and peer-to-peer fundraising, raffles and in-memory donations
  • Assists with annual appeals and campaigns
  • Any other duties as assigned
  • Provides support to the Director of Development as required
Job Requirements

Education and experience:

  • Minimum post-secondary diploma required in fundraising, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • Two years of fundraising experience in a not-for-profit setting
  • Knowledge of non-profit organizations and fundraising strategy
  • Experience with donor CRM platforms (preferably DonorPerfect) and/or have the ability to become adept at using the DonorPerfect donor and membership management system
  • Understanding of and experience with CRA receipting guidelines

Core competencies:

  • Comfortable with software such as Microsoft 365, Teams, Monday.com, Constant Contact, DonorPerfect (or other donor database systems)
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Strong interpersonal, networking and relationship-building skills
  • Work collaboratively with a team and independently lead projects
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, time-management, organization, and critical thinking; attention to detail is imperative
  • The ability to take initiative and work on several projects concurrently

Compensation and benefits:

  • $57,000 to $62,000 per year
  • 4 weeks paid vacation to start
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including extended health care and Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) for employees working 20 or more hours per week after 3 months of employment
