Dear Members,
As we enjoy the height of summer, I hope you’re finding time to rest, recharge, and reflect on the first half of the year. It’s been an energizing start to 2025, and our chapter leadership is so proud of the connections and learning opportunities that we have shared with you so far this year.
The calendar for the fall is going to be packed with great professional development sessions and networking events, so continue to keep an eye on your inbox for registration details to be released.

Government Relations
It’s the summer and therefore not much to report back to the membership as both the Provincial and Federal Legislatures are on recess until the fall. This, however, is the perfect time to try your hand at government relations either for your own organization or the sector as a whole. Your representative will be in their home electoral district (Provincial) or riding (Federal) and looking to meet with their constituents (YOU). Look out for opportunities to meet with your representatives – typically shared on social media – and most likely in the form of a summer barbecue.
If you have an opportunity to meet with your MLA or MP, make sure to take the chance to introduce yourself, your cause, and how important the charitable sector is to British Columbia/Canada.
Speaking points:
- Provincial: Ask your MLA if they are aware of the lack of unrestricted funding for the sector, and the unprecedented demand for support!
- For the 2023/2024 Community Prosperity Fund, the administrators received requests totalling $224M, far exceeding the $25M provided by the Province. (Shout out to the BC Non-Profit Network)
- Our ask in Budget 2026 is a $30M contribution to the Community Prosperity Fund.
- Federal: Ask your MP if they are familiar with the Non-profit sector and the fact that its own of the country’s largest employers (2.5M), generating a significant economic impact ($200B+) without representation at the Federal level.
- Make sure to tie in your cause, tell them the impacts of the ongoing trade dispute, etc., and how it’s impacting your ability to raise funds.
- With the government’s focus being on reducing red tape, let them know how a single window into government would help, i.e., our dedicated secretariat!
Some other updates:
- Last June, the Chair of the Government Relations committee provided a recommendation (see above note on $30M) to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services as part of BC Budget Consultation 2026. Read more about that here.
- On this point, work continues to cultivate and steward relationships within the Provincial Legislature to advance this important ask.
- Federally, we are assessing opportunities as they become available, whether that is meeting with MPS or departmental staff – we believe that momentum is with us relating to the creation of a dedicated secretariat for the charitable sector.
